For our English members, I also translated a few Dutch reviews I came across.

After two years the second issue of Howling Riot is finally released. Just as before there was the ambition to make a full-fledged anthology with various continuing series. Again it is a colour publication – which is ever still remarkably unique. That simultaneously makes it incomprehensible that half of the book is executed in greytones, since when one has the opportunity to handle something that grand, one should make use of it. The style of the first issue returns unchanged in Volume 2; it’s still all about pure shonen manga with lots of action and humour. Howling Riot Volume 2 contains about five long comics, of which four continue where they left off previously. “Blood Wolf” and “The Bad Guy” are bursting with action scenes, “Change of Heart” remains an atmospherically coloured fantasy epic and newcomer “Served Cold” is a somewhat easily executed “be careful what you wish for” story. Everything looks splendid on the glossy pages. The biggest point of criticism remains the golden rule that sequel stories don’t work well when one has to wait longer than a couple of months. Hopefully therefore Volume 3 will appear a lot sooner, because the enthusiasm with which Howling Riot is made is perceivable all throughout. |

The drawings are generally very well done. There are some talented people in your group. The stories are of varying quality; particularly action scenes and building up atmosphere are apparently very hard. It’s a bit of a shame that most parts are so short you don’t really have the time to get into the story, particularly with the continuing series.
My favourite is “The Bad Guy”. Not to degrade the rest, but in terms of art, originality and the creation of atmosphere, this one just sticks out. Splendid use of light and shadow, and the page layout is sublime. You can add another candle for Eugene |

You've got some good stuff in there. The one I especially liked is "The Bad Guy", very refined style, and a nice variety of faces and atmospheres. I also liked Blood Wolf, although some panels are better than others.
You got pretty sweet production values, and colour inside, which is rare (because it must cost you a lot!).
There are other things I didn't like as much though. Interviews with one of the characters of your story is just a bit too meta for me. Served Cold is frustrating, because some of the art is really good (eg. first appearance of the monster) but then other shots don't live up to that. The demon narrator also seemed a bit superfluous, you could have used those pages for the actual story.
It's a cool book all together though, and I'd like to read any following. |
